WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS ONTO THE COALITION’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County is so proud to announce that Palm Beach County School Board Member, Marcia Andrews of District 6 and Dr. Grace Kolbe, Director of the Institute of Excellence in Early Care and Education from Palm Beach State College are both new members of our Board of Directors. With their amazing backgrounds and dedication to education, we know they will be great additions to our Board. We look forward to working with them.

The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County initiated services in our community-based location in Belle Glade during the month of June and have continued services in our temporary location in West Palm Beach. Our second community-based location in Riviera Beach will be opening in August, as well as our newly renovated Suite 142 within the same West Palm Beach building. In order to provide access to services for our families in hard to reach areas of the county, the Coalition will also have roving staff members throughout the entire county utilizing locations with our early learning partners.

Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County News It is well known how important early learning and education is, because a child’s experiences during the first five years of life provide the foundation for success in school and also charts the course for future successes. Investing in quality early learning and education is the best investment one can make. The Coalition provides parents and families of Palm Beach County with assistance and information in selecting high quality early learning programs, including School Readiness, Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) and access to Children’s Services Council (CSC) Scholarships. Our Coalition has improved the lives of many children and families in Palm Beach County. During Fiscal Year 2013-2014 alone, over 33,800 unduplicated children were served through Voluntary Prekindergarten, School Readiness and Children Services Council Scholarships programs

Federal Update Last week, The White House announced a proposal for a fairer tax code that invests in middle-class families, including an expansion of the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC). On Tuesday, President Obama emphasized the importance of child care during his State of the Union address, saying that “it’s time we stop treating child care as a side issue, or as a women’s issue, and treat it like the national economic priority that it is for all of us.” And on Thursday, the President announced a major new proposal to make high-quality child care available for all infants and toddlers in low- and moderate income families. the President proposes to provide an additional $80 billion over ten years for the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG). The funding would be used to make child care assistance available to all families with incomes up to 200 percent of poverty (about $40,000 a year for a family of three) and children under age four so parents could work or a

We have already started the year off right by attending some fun community events. The Coalition was invited to table our information at the opening of a new Cross Fit gym in the local area. It was the perfect opportunity for these moms and dads to learn about early education and getting in shape! The event drew an estimated 200 people with a special visit from Mayor Michael Udine of Parkland!

We are so excited about the new Inclusion Services provided by the Coalition. We would also like to welcome Maria Gutierrez, Inclusion Specialist to the team! These services include consultations for child care centers and family child care homes regarding health, development, disabilities and special needs issues of the children that our providers are serving. We also have trainings to support parents as well. Both parents and providers have the opportunity to participate in technical assistance trainings including developmental screening, individual child development, and classroom management. We also have Inclusion Warm Line at 1-888-620-9190.
