We were so pleased to have First Lady Ann Scott visit Opportunity Early Learning Center in West Palm Beach. Joining us in welcoming Ann Scott to the center was Tana Ebbole, Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County. It was great to have Ann Scott read to the children and see the great quality child care Opportunity Early Learning Center provides to the children and families in Palm Beach County.

The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County News
The Early Coalition of Palm Beach County hosted four provider meetings in Boynton Beach, Belle Glade and West Palm Beach last week. Between all four meetings, there were over 250 providers in attendance. During the meetings multiple vendors and system partners presented. The vendors included: Sunform, the Anti-Defamation League, Abrams Learning Tools and Starfall. The system partners included: The Florida Department of Health, Family Central, Inc. and Palm Beach State College. There were also updates regarding VPK as well as the Provider Portal, Developmental Screening, Monitoring and new services including Training and Technical Assistance. All information presented at the meetings will be posted on the Coalition’s website by Friday September 5th. We would like to wish all the students a great day back to school and we wish you a wonderful school year. We know often times it is difficult to get back in the swing of things after summer vacation so we have provided the article below that might be helpful in order to get back in the swing of things for your family.
Helping kids get the proper amount of sleep
One of the biggest adjustments to getting back into the school mindset is sleep schedule. Regular bedtimes often get pushed back, or let’s face it, completely eliminated when there’s no morning bell to consider. Getting enough sleep isn’t just a matter of making those morning wakeup routines less rushed and grumpy — although it totally will do that, trust me — it also has a profound effect on your child’s overall health and academic performance.

The past few weeks has been filled with excitement! We were so pleased to have Shan Goff, The Executive Director of The Office of Early Learning and Chad Poppell, Chief of Staff to The Department of Economic Opportunity visit Palm Beach County. During their short trip they had the opportunity to visit one of our quality counts VPK sites. With the assistance of Chelsea Reinhart, ELC's Program Assurance Manager, our guests toured DeVos-Blum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach center. We appreciate the director of the center, Donna Angus for showing our friends from Tallahassee firsthand how vital it is for our children to receive quality care early education.
May 2014: A Legislative Summary

The 2014 Legislative Session ended late Friday evening. For the second consecutive year, early learning programs received a great deal of attention throughout the 60 day session. As the budgets were presented in both chambers on Friday, leaders understood the need to invest in our children. The budget was passed with an additional $3 million for the School Readiness program and a 2 percent increase (or $54 per child) to the base student allocation for the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Program, which serves 80 percent of all four-year-old children. Moreover, for the first time in the history of the School Readiness program in Florida, a pilot to demonstrate higher quality standards within the program was established.

The 2014 Legislative Session is here. After several months of committee hearings, our elected officials have started their 60 day session.
The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County has met with the Palm Beach County Delegation to educate them on the goals of the Coalitions across the state of Florida. We have been in contact with specific elected officials who play a key role in the decision process. In the State House, Rep. Mark Pafford is on the House Appropriations Committee while Senator Joe Negron leads on the Senate Appropriations Committee. State Senator Maria Sachs sits on both the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and the Education Committee.

We are quickly preparing to move into legislative session in the first week of March. With leadership from the Board Chairman of the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County, Adam Hasner, and support from the Children Services Council of Palm Beach County, we are already quickly making the grade when it comes to informing all of our elected officials about our priorities. Last week Governor Scott announced his recommendations for early learning, echoing the priorities/needs requested by our coalition partners all across the state.

The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County looks forward to meeting our new goals and continues to provide quality early education in 2014. We all know there is a direct correlation between investing in early learning and the success of a child’s long term education. Early learning is also essential for not just the child but families as well. When parents are able to work and maintain employment, they are more economically self-sufficient and contribute to a sustainable workforce.
